It was pointed out to me by a co-worker earlier this year that beer seems to be the motivating factor for me when it comes to running races. After thinking about it, I really can’t argue. Earlier this year I ran the Shamrock Shuffle in 18 degree weather and a beer fairy costume. The first man and women to cross the finish each won their weight in beer. I had no shot at the prize but did really enjoy dressing up.

On Friday, I ran the Twilight 12K for the second time. The race is really fun and a bit different than most. It starts at 7 pm and ends with free beer and pizza from Moose’s Tooth on the Anchorage Park Strip. The only thing that gets me through the giant hill in the last half mile of the race is “you get to drink beer after this” running through my head over and over as I gasp for breath and power up the hill and awkwardly onto the grass before the finish. Beer is an awesome motivator and that first sip at the finish line in honestly the best thing I have ever tasted in my life.
